The workers were trapped under 10 feet of dirt.

At least one worker is dead following a trench collapse in Boonton Wednesday afternoon.

According to officials, four landscapers were excavating a drainage pipe on Rockaway Valley Road around 3:45 p.m.

After a section of the work site collapsed, one worker jumped in to rescue another. They were under 10 feet of dirt, Boonton Township Police Chief Paul Fortunato told NJ.com.

"They've been down there for several hours," Fortunato said. "There's still hope but we don't know what we'll find."

Rescue crews came to the scene from Elizabeth, Hackensack, Madison, Morristown and Newark.
