MT Firefighter Killed While Battling Wildfire

July 20--A firefighter was killed Wednesday in Montana when he was struck by a falling tree while working to contain a wildfire in the Lolo National Forest.

Trenton M. Johnson, a 19-year-old firefighter who lived in Missoula and worked for Grayback Forestry, was part of a 20-person attack crew battling a blaze in the Seeley Ranger District of the forest when the incident happened, according to a line-of-duty fatality notice released by the U.S. Fire Administration on Thursday.

Johnson was flown to a hospital in Missoula but was pronounced dead after arriving.

"It's with sadness that Grayback Forestry, Inc., confirms that on July 19, an employee was killed in the line while fighting a forest fire," read a release by the company.

The sheriff's office is investigating the details surrounding the event, according to a spokesperson.
