FL Firefighters Close Waterway to Tackle Large Boat Blaze

May 18, 2020
Fort Lauderdale's intercostal waterway was shut down in both directions while firefighters put out a 60-foot sport fisherman boat that caught fire and injured two Sunday.

A massive boat fire in Fort Lauderdale shut down the intracoastal waterway in both directions and two people were treated for injuries as of about 3:20 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

The boat, an approximately 60-foot sport fisherman caught fire Sunday, directly behind the Shooters restaurant, located at 3033 Northeast 32nd Ave. just south of Oakland Park Boulevard, according to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Stephen Gollan.

Gollan said two people were injured, but did not immediately have any additional information on the extent of their injuries.

“FLFR is working a boat fire aboard and approximately 60 foot sport fishermen on the inter coastal and East Oakland Park Blvd.,” Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue tweeted at 3:08 p.m.

There is minimal impact to nearby roads, but the intracoastal waterway is shut down as of about 3:30 p.m. according to Gollan.

Photos provided by Fort Lauderdale Vice Mayor Steve Glassman show huge clouds of black smoke emanating from the fire visible from blocks away.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known and it was unclear if there were any other injuries.
