Arlington, TX, Firefighter Shot at EMS Run Released from Hospital

Brady Weaver was shot when Arlington firefighters and police responded to a welfare check call.

An Arlington firefighter was released from the hospital Friday after being shot last week while conducting a welfare check.

The firefighter, Brady Weaver, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries March 22 after being shot in the chest, officials have said.

Weaver has “remained in good spirits” despite the “tremendous amount of pain” from the shooting and is glad to be home, Arlington Professional Fire Fighters said in a news release Friday.

Arlington police and firefighters were sent about 12:45 a.m. March 22 to an apartment complex in the 400 block of Bardin Greene Drive, near East Bardin Road. A resident reported hearing children crying and calling for their mother to wake up, police have said.

Officers knocked on the door for more than five minutes, but no one answered, police said. Officers announced themselves 17 times, Assistant Police Chief Tarrick McGuire told reporters.

Because the officers could hear children crying, they pried the door open and entered the apartment. Soon after, a single gunshot was fired and the round struck one of the firefighters, according to police.

Officers directed everyone in the apartment to exit. Police said at the time they believed a man to be the shooter and he was detained.

No one else was injured, police said.

A man accused in the shooting, 27-year-old Demetric Brooks, is facing a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to court records.
