An Arlington firefighter was shot and wounded while conducting a welfare check early Friday morning, police said.

About 12:45 a.m., Arlington police and fire officials were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 400 block of Bardin Greene Drive after a resident reported hearing children crying, calling for their mother to wake up.

Once officers arrived, they knocked on the door and announced their presence for more than five minutes, police said, but no one answered. Because they could still hear children crying inside, they forced their way into the apartment by prying the door open using a breaching tool.

Shortly after, a single shot was fired from inside the apartment, striking one of the firefighters who was at the door, according to police.

The firefighter, identified as Brady Weaver, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Police said he was “stable and alert” as of Friday afternoon.

“The Arlington Police and Fire Departments ask the community to join them in praying for his full recovery,” police officials wrote in a statement.

After the gunfire, officers directed everyone inside the apartment to come outside, according to police. A man, woman and two children complied.

Police said they believe the man was the shooter, adding he was detained and being questioned by detectives Friday.

The man’s name was not released and department officials said investigators will work with the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether criminal charges should be filed.
