The Underhill Jericho Fire Department (Underhill, VT) specced David Clark Company’s wireless headset system on its Engine 11 attack pumper. The system consists of five headsets, with the two front seats being able to communicate over the radio and the three rear seats being intercom communications within the vehicle. “Prior to having the David Clark headset installed on Engine 11, we often faced the challenges of clear communication within the truck,” the department chief, Matthew Champlain says. “With the road noise, the siren and the air horn sounding, it was difficult for the crew in the back seat to hear all the communications and get a clear understanding of the scene that they’re arriving at and the instructions from the officer of the truck. Now, the folks riding in the truck are able to hear the incident commander on the fireground with his initial size-up, what’s going on, what’s expected of the truck and any hazards that are in place at the scene. As people have used the system more and more, they like it better and better.”
