Less than two weeks after the Jan. 16 fire, scientists discovered levels of toxic metals at more than 100 times the normal background levels in soils at Elkhorn Slough, roughly two miles away.
The Jan. 16 fire at Moss Landing, the largest battery storage plant in the country, sent a toxic cloud over Monterey Bay and other communities.
