Oct. 16--KNOXVILLE -- No injuries were reported in a traffic crash today when a Knoxville Fire Department district chief collided with a pickup truck while en route to a reported fire alarm.

The collision occurred at 12:14 p.m. along Kingston Pike, just east of Northshore Drive, according to KFD Capt. D.J. Corcoran.

A full contingent of personnel were responding to the call at a hotel on North Peters Road, including KFD District Chief Fred Baty, a 38-year department veteran, who was driving a KFD Chevy Suburban with its lights and siren activated, Corcoran said.

A Ford F-250 quad-cab pickup truck pulled out of the Bearden Center and the two vehicles collided, he said.

The Ford's driver and his two daughters with him in the vehicle did not require medical attention, while Baty was sent to the University of Tennessee Medical Center on a non-emergency basis for an evaluation, per KFD protocol, Corcoran said.

It was not immediately clear whether the pickup truck driver, who was not named, is expected to be cited or charged.

The initial fire alarm call was canceled.
