A driver and his two passengers were in stable condition Saturday after a Chevy 3500 pickup collided with a Channelview Volunteer Fire Department fire truck.
The pickup driver, whose name was not immediately available, was westbound on the Interstate 10 feeder road at Thompson when his truck collided with a fire engine headed north on Thompson, responding to a house fire in the area, according to D. Cheek, an accident investigator with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
Jack Barbee, a Baytown resident who was stopped at a red light at the eastbound feeder road, said the trucks collided with great force.
"It was one heck of a collision," said Barbee, who was with his 12-year-old son, Caleb. "The (pickup) knocked the fire truck across the median and almost knocked it over. It had hoses and everything else knocked out of the truck. It was something like we've never seen before."
The pickup driver was taken by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital-The Texas Medical Center in stable condition. Two passengers in the pickup were taken by ambulance to an area hospital in stable condition, Cheek said.
Three firefighters in the fire truck were not injured, witnesses said.
Cheek said the accident was under investigation.
"I haven't had a chance to talk to the (pickup) driver," she said.
A sign on the pickup indicated it was from a Baytown company. No one answered the phone there.
