A man has died from injuries he sustained when he was struck by a Phoenix Fire Department apparatus that was leaving its station on a response call.

The Arizona Republic reports that the incident occurred Monday morning at about 11:37 a.m. outside Station 3 near 12th Ave. and Pierce St. shortly after a rescue unit was dispatched on an emergency call.

As the rescue unit exited the station, crew members said they heard a bump before looking out the rearview mirror and seeing a backpack lying on the ground. Firefighters then exited the apparatus and found an injured adult male.

The man, who police did not identify, was taken to a nearby hospital but later pronounced dead.
