VA Fire Engine Hit While Blocking Wreck Scene

A Chesterfield Fire and EMS engine was rear-ended while blocking a parkway right lane as firefighters worked a previous wreck.

A fire apparatus belonging to Chesterfield, VA, Fire and EMS was severely damaged when it was rear-ended at a crash scene Sunday morning.

According to a report published by WTVR6, no firefighters were hurt during the event, but the driver of the car that hit the fire truck, Joseph Clary, 40, of Chester, VA, was taken to a local hospital with not life-threatening injuries. According to the TV station, he was charged with reckless driving and driving with a suspended license.

The crash happened on Chippenham Parkway in Chesterfield County at about 11:45 am. Virginia State Police reported the crash between the sedan and the fire truck happened while the apparatus we in the parkway right lane, with its lights activated, blocking a lane as crews were working a previous accident.>

Lt. Jason Elmore, Chesterfield Fire and EMS spokesman Tweeted about the crash urging motorists to move over when approaching an emergency scene.

“This is happening too often,” Elmore Tweeted. “We are pleading with drivers to #MoveOver.”

The parkway crash comes on the heels of a fatal wreck about six weeks ago when Hanover, VA, Lt. Brad Clark was killed and three others firefighters were injured when the driver of a tractor-trailer drove into a fire apparatus while working at an Interstate 295 during Tropical Storm Michael.
