Several firefighters in Routt County can thank their seat belts for preventing serious injuries when their apparatus left the road and tumbled down an embankment following a fire call this past weekend.

CBS Denver reports that the West Routt Fire Protection District apparatus was returning to quarters after crews battled a garage fire on Saturday when it left the road and rolled over 200 feet down a steep embankment.

All the firefighters on board the engine were wearing their seat belts at the time of the incident and suffered only minor injuries.

Crews from Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue and West Rout FPD responded to the crash.

According to CBS Denver, officials do not believe speed was a factor in the wreck, saying the apparatus "broke loose" on a road which had hairpin turns covered in snow and ice.
