Driver Dies after Striking SC Apparatus at Scene

Jan. 4, 2021
A driver was killed after striking the rear of Colleton County Fire Rescue's Engine 26 while it was at the scene of an earlier accident along Interstate 95.

A driver was killed after his car crashed into a South Carolina fire apparatus that was at the scene of a previous accident late Saturday.

The incident happened just after 11:30 a.m. as Colleton County Fire Rescue crews were responding to a single-car crash during a thunderstorm at mile marker 60 along Interstate 95, according to the department. That's when a Nissan Altima traveling at a high rate of speed struck the rear of the department's Engine 26.

The Altima caught fire following the crash, and firefighters used a handline to put out the flames. The accident damaged the engine's rescue equipment, and crews needed to use hand tools to break a window and free the Altima's driver.

The 42-year-old driver suffered multiple traumatic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. No firefighters were injured in the crash, but Engine 26 was heavily damaged.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the incident, the fire department added.
