MT Apparatus in Rollover Crash on Way to Call

Feb. 5, 2021
Three Billings firefighters were hospitalized as a precaution after their apparatus crashed on a slick highway while responding to a previous accident.

Interstate 90 near Lockwood saw multiple crashes Friday morning that slowed traffic, including one fire truck that rolled over on its side while responding to a crash.

A Billings Fire Department truck rolled onto its side shortly after 8 a.m. on Highway 87 just east of the Dick Johnson Bridge while responding to a crash on I-90, Fire Marshal Mike Spini wrote in a press release.

"The road conditions were extremely slick due to snow and ice," Spini said.

The truck rolled on its side, coming to rest off the highway, he said.

No major injuries were reported in the rollover, but the engine crew, consisting of three firefighters, were transported by ambulance to St. Vincent's Hospital for precautionary measures, Spini said.

Montana Highway Patrol will investigate, he said.

The firefighters were responding to a two-vehicle crash just after 8 a.m. on Friday westbound on I-90 near mile marker 452.

One passenger in the crash was trapped requiring extraction, Spini said, prompting a response from the fire department.

Westbound traffic was being detoured off of I-90 at the Lockwood interchange, according to the Montana Department of Transportation.

A trooper with the Montana Highway Patrol did not immediately return a phone call seeking additional information on the I-90 crash.
