Woman Killed in Collision with LA Fire Apparatus

A Livingston Parish Fire Protection District No. 5 apparatus struck a trailer from behind in Denham Springs before crossing the centerline and crashing into another vehicle.

An 85-year-old woman was killed when a Louisiana fire apparatus collided with her vehicle in a three-vehicle crash Sunday.

The accident happened in the late morning in Denham Springs, WAFB-TV reports. A Livingston Parish Fire Protection District No. 5 apparatus was traveling north on Pete's Highway when it struck the rear of a trailer.

The rig then crossed the centerline and struck a vehicle traveling south. Gail Rippel, the driver of the vehicle, was taken to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

The 23-year-old firefighter driving the apparatus was injured and taken to the hospital. He was later released. 

The driver of the vehicle pulling the trailer that was initially struck refused medical attention.

It's not clear if the apparatus was responding to a call at the time of the accident. Denham Springs police are investigation the incident.
