Brighton Township, MI, Rig Hit on Highway
BRIGHTON TWP., MI — A fire truck was struck on Interstate 96 while emergency personnel were responding to a rollover crash early Sunday morning, Aug. 31.
Brighton Area Fire Authority was providing advanced warning of a two-vehicle rollover crash on westbound I-96 near U.S. 23 in Brighton Township when a Kia struck a fire truck in the median shoulder.
The fire truck had its emergency lights activated at the time of the crash, BAFA officials said in a statement on Facebook. A firefighter was inside the truck when it was struck.
The “jaws of life” were needed to access the driver of the Kia, BAFA officials said.
The 2023 Kia Sportage was operated by a 32-year-old female from Au Gres, according to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, WLIX reported.
First responders were pulled off the original crash to care for the Kia driver and firefighter, who were transported to Ann Arbor hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
The fire department was providing the advanced warning in response to “a near miss” that had occurred earlier, BAFA officials said.
“It is a reminder to slow down and have patience when operating around emergency vehicles,” BAFA officials said. “Our staff have a very difficult job working on the freeway and their safety is our priority when accidents happen.”
The crashes remain under investigation.
