FDNY EMT Charged after Fatally Striking Man with Ambulance

July 23, 2020
FDNY EMT Iyana Curtis faces charges stemming from a June incident in which she was driving an ambulance and struck a 63-year-old man, who died from his injuries Sunday, according to police.

An FDNY EMT was arrested and charged in connection with an incident last month in which she allegedly ran a stop sign in an ambulance and struck a 63-year-old man, who died from his injuries over the weekend.

Iyana Curtis was arrested Thursday and charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian, failure to stop at a stop sign and failure to exercise due care stemming from a June 30 incident in Brooklyn that killed Dane Striani, the New York Post reports. Curtis, 23, is currently "restricted from patient care and driving a Department vehicle," an FDNY spokesman said.

According to police, Curtis was on duty and driving an FDNY ambulance in the East New York area of Brooklyn when she struck Striani at an intersection. She treated Striani at the scene before taking him to the hospital, where he died from his injuries Sunday, according to the Post.

It's not clear if Curtis was on her way to a call when the accident happened.

Curtis has been with the FDNY since June 2017.
