Patient in Stolen VA Ambulance Leads Police on Chase

A man revived with Naloxone stole a Henry County Public Safety ambulance, and police pursued him for nearly an hour, reaching speeds of up to 120 mph.

A patient is accused of stealing a Virginia ambulance and leading police on a chase for nearly an hour late last week.

Henry County Public Safety medics responded to a crash in Basset involving a stolen vehicle shortly after 11 a.m., WSLS-TV reports. A man was injured and unconscious in the incident, and he was put in an ambulance, where he was given Naloxone.

When the man regained consciousness, he became combative and took control of the ambulance. During the chase, which lasted just over 50 minutes, the man allegedly led police on a chase that reached speeds of up to 120 mph and crossed over into Patrick County.

Eventually, authorities deployed spike strips, which stopped the ambulance and sent it crashing into a field. The man then fled the ambulance but was apprehended by K9 units.

Derrick Devon Martin, 50, was being held in Henry County Jail, and he faces multiple charges stemming from the incident.
