Two New Mexico EMTs were injured while responding to an emergency when their ambulance overturned after it was struck by an alleged drunk driver Thursday.
The accident involving an American Medical Response ambulance happened shortly after 8 p.m. at a Las Cruces intersection, police stated in an online update. The ambulance—emergency lights and siren running— had been headed to a call when it was struck by a Dodge Challenger that had run a stop sign.
The impact rolled the ambulance on its side, trapping the EMTs. Firefighters needed to break the windshield to extricate the two from the unit, police said.
The EMTs were taken to the hospital, and heir injuries weren't considered life-threatening. The driver and two challengers weren't seriously injured.
Juan Carlos Baquera, 22, was charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated and failure to stop. He was arrested on another DWI charge two days earlier, according to police.
