An elderly patient died and eight people were injured following a collision between an ambulance and another vehicle in New York City on Sunday.
The incident involving a Hatzolah ambulance happened at about 3 p.m. in Brooklyn's Flatlands neighborhood, the New York Daily News reports. The ambulance was taking a 95-year-old woman with heart issues to the hospital when the emergency vehicle—with its lights and siren on—drove through a red light at an intersection, police told WPIX-TV.
That's when the ambulance struck the front bumper of a 2002 Nissan Maxima, sending the apparatus into a spin, a preliminary police investigation determined. The ambulance eventually flipped onto the driver's side and slid into a Toyota Camry stopped at the intersection.
Following the accident, which was captured on video by a security camera, the patient in the ambulance was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. It's not clear if her death was caused by injuries suffered in the collision or the cardiac issues that was the initial reason she was being taken to the hospital.
Seven people aboard the ambulance—six EMS workers and a driver—as well as the Maxima's driver and passenger, suffered minor injuries in the collision and were taken to the hospital, according to WPIX.
The accident is still under investigation.
