Fiery Ambulance, SUV Crash in Sullivan, IL, Leaves Two Firefighters Hurt
Two Sullivan firefighter/EMTs suffered minor injuries in a fiery ambulance crash Tuesday while returning from a call.
Bright lights from a vehicle parked along the shoulder facing them prevented them from seeing an SUV stopped in the roadway, Sullivan Fire Chief Chris Wright told WCIA.
The ambulance struck the SUV in the passenger's side instead of swerving and possibly striking a person, the chief said.
Both vehicles ended up in a ditch. And, as the ambulance crew emerged, they noticed both vehicles were on fire. There was no one in the SUV when the collision occurred.
“When I saw the amount of damage and the amount of fire that was involved with the both vehicles, it was a great sigh of relief that both of my guys were safe, accounted for and going home to their families at the end of it,” Wright said.
