Repaired Engine Dedicated to Late Comstock, MI, Chief Headed Home

June 17, 2025
The rig, dedicated to Comstock Fire & Rescue Chief Ed Switalski, was struck along an icy highway in December.

On a snow-covered highway last December, an out-of-control box truck struck four vehicles, including "Ed's engine," dedicated to the late Comstock Fire & Rescue Chief Ed Switalski.

"We truly believe Chief Ed was with us that day, just as he has been every day since his passing—watching over us, protecting our dedicated members, our fellow responders, and the public," Comstock officials told WWMT.

Two firefighters were injured in the collision that also damaged a fire department support vehicle, a Kalamazoo deputy's cruiser and a tow truck.

Comstock fire officers said it was difficult to see the damage to Ed's engine as it was "more than just a piece of equipment—it was a symbol of legacy."

Switalski, who was hit and killed in 2017 on I-94 in the same area, had been deeply involved in the engine's design. But he didn't live to see it's first inspection.

In his honor, firefighters drove to Wisconsin to watch the inspection. The manufacturer put memorial decals on both sides of the rig as well as a copy of his obituary in the driver's door

The recent repairs and final inspection were completed just days before the eighth anniversary of the chief's final alarm -- June 14. It is expected back in the fire station next week.
