Driver Killed in Crash with Wichita, KS, Fire Apparatus

Police say the 79-year-old man collided with a Wichita Fire Department pumper that was responding to a call.

A Wichita man died Tuesday following a crash between an SUV and a Wichita Fire Department engine on the city’s southeast side.

Police identified the man as James Mattson

Wichita Police Department Capt. Aaron Moses said 79-year-old Mattson was driving a Honda SUV along Lincoln near the street’s intersection with Greenwich just before 9 a.m. Tuesday when it collided with a fire truck.

Moses said the fire engine had emergency lights and sirens on, and was responding to a call when it collided with Mattson’s Honda. The fire truck was traveling north on Greenwich.

After the crash, Mattson was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Moses said.

Four firefighters inside the truck were uninjured, though Wichita Fire Department Chief Michael Mire said they were shaken up.

A third vehicle, a pickup truck, was also involved in the crash, Moses said, though the driver of that vehicle was uninjured.
