A rig protecting Byron Center Township firefighters working at a crash scene Saturday night was struck by a vehicle operated by a suspected drunk driver.

"The Tender serves as both a physical barrier and a highly visible warning to approaching drivers that there is an emergency scene ahead," Byron Center Township fire officials wrote in a statement.

Firefighters performed a rapid extrication of the civilian driver, believed to have been intoxicated, Michigan State Police told WOOD.

"The Tender absorbed the impact so our personnel did not...Apparatus can be replaced, but people cannot," firefighers wrote.
