An Illinois fire apparatus—lights and siren on as it pulled out of the station to respond to a call—barely avoided a being hit by speeding pickup truck.
The near miss happened outside the Decatur Fire Department's Station 5, WAND-TV reports. As the apparatus was leaving the station to head to an emergency, a pickup truck was heading toward it at a high rate of speed.
The apparatus driver was able to brake in time and the pickup swerved at the last minute to avoid a collision. A security camera outside the station captured video of the scary moment.
Battalion Chief Jim Ohl told WAND that almost accidents like the one at Station 5 are common. He blamed many of these potentially disastrous incidents on distracted drivers on their cellphones.
