"All I could do was curl up in a ball," Injured Rosston, OK, Firefighter Recalls
“There’s nothing to do with any hero this or hero that. We love what we do."
That's what Rosston Firefighter Chris Campbell told a KFOR reporter from his hospital bed.
“We turned to get on that fire line, and it was almost immediate. You see fire and nothing but smoke.”
That's when their rig went off the road and fell into a canyon. Campbell, who was driving, was trapped while Firefighters Jake Edwards and Randy Masters were thrown off.
Campbell said he was praying while stuck in the burning vehicle. He suffered severe second-degree burns on his arms and hands, and remains in the INTEGRIS Health Paul Silverstein Burn Center.
Edwards and Masters also were injured.
Another crash during the Beaver County operation left Follett Firefighter Creed Baldwin injured.
His rig also ended up going into a ravine.
"We were in such heavy smoke we couldn’t see it."
“I broke two ribs, done another flip, and then I landed on the ground."
Both Baldwin and Campbell spoke with pride about their volunteer fire departments, and urged residents to support them.
“Ninety percent of these guys that are on these volunteer fire departments, they’re farmers and ranchers. They’re saving their neighbor’s place while their place is burning down,” Baldwin said.
Campbell added that he and his crew were just doing their job. He said departments need community support.
