“It was coming up the hill like a blow torch...In a second it went from being a normal brush fire to an inferno."

That's how Louisa Fire Chief Eddie Preston described the frightening, chaotic scene at a brush fire that led to a mayday, minor burns to two firefighters and damage to two rigs.

When the wind picked up, things quickly went south as flames were blowing underneath their truck, WSAZ reported.

“Myself and one of the firefighters got in the truck under extreme heat and smoke conditions and got it far enough away from the fire to a safe area. Then a tree blew over and fell on another fire truck being used to help the one in danger, crushing the cab. Nobody was inside."

Another one of their fire trucks that was parked on a steep embankment tipped over on its side.  A firefighter inside wasn't hurt.

The chief said as this was playing out, other firefighters were working to prevent the out-of-control fire from spreading to houses.

Two firefighters suffered minor burns on their arms but were not transported.

“It’s very relieving nobody was seriously hurt."

The truck that had the tree fall on it will be sent back to the Wisconsin manufacturer while the one that tipped over is headed to Shelbyville for repairs.

Preston said while insurance will cover the cost of one rental truck during repairs, he hopes to borrow another.
