Another Upton, KY, Fire Apparatus Struck on Interstate

"I am not even done with the first insurance claim," Upton Fire Chief Tyler Hiser said, referring to a May crash that totaled an engine.

When one of their rigs was hit on I-65 this past weekend, it was deja vu for Upton firefighters.

It was the second apparatus to fall victim to a distracted driver in three months. Luckily, no firefighters were injured.

"I am not even done with the first insurance claim," Upton Fire Chief Tyler Hiser told WDRB.

The front bumper was ripped off the tanker in the recent wreck, causing at least $5,000 damage. In May, however, an engine was totaled after it was rear-ended by a semi.

"We are a very small, rural department with limited funding. When something like this happens, we strongly rely on our city to help us out."

Fire officials are still working to determine the cost of replacing it.

In 2014, Glendale Fire Lt. Jonathan French was struck and killed by a motorist while assisting at a crash scene.  Since his death, distracted drivers have been involved in six crashes involving Hardin County apparatus.

Kentucky Sen. Matt Deneen is proposing legislation that would allocate $6 million to fund mobile safety barriers and buffer devices designed to shield emergency personnel and vehicles from oncoming highway traffic.

"It is about saving lives first," Deneen said of the grant. "It is about ensuring that our emergency service personnel that are responding to these highway accidents work safely and return home to their families."
