Safety Stand Down 2022

The theme of the 2022 Safety Stand Down campaign is “Situational Awareness: The Foundation for Good Decision-Making.” The event, which will take place June 19–25, 2022, is a joint initiative of the International Association of Fire Chiefs Safety, Health and Survival Section, the National Volunteer Fire Council, the NFPA and the Fire Department Safety Officers Association. Responder agencies are encouraged to suspend all nonemergency activities during this week to focus on training and education that’s related to situational awareness.
The week will be broken into five daily focus areas. This is done to highlight situational awareness during different incident types: structure fires, EMS, wildland incidents, roadway response and acts of violence. Resources, training videos and a PowerPoint presentation will be made available prior to the week on the Safety Stand Down website.

Fire Departments Honored for Excellence in EMS

South Metro, CO, Fire Rescue (SMFR), the Loudoun County, VA, Combined Fire and Rescue System (LC-CFRS), and the Fairfax County, VA, Fire and Rescue Department (FCFRD) were recognized with the 2022 Excellence in Fire Service-Based EMS Award. The award celebrates innovations in the delivery of emergency medical services.
SMFR was honored for implementing a point-of-care ultrasound imaging program in the pre-hospital environment. The goal of the program is to improve patient outcomes by enhancing on-scene diagnostic capacity. Designed initially for response to cardiac arrest emergencies, SMFR expanded the program for lung imaging to identify clinical findings representative of COVID-19 pneumonia.
The LC-CFRS and the FCFRD were recognized for their partnership in developing the novel Field Available Component Transfusion Response (FACT-R) pre-hospital blood program. The program enables emergency medical vehicles to carry whole blood that can be used in the field by ALS providers on trauma patients.
The Congressional Fire Services Institute and Masimo are the sponsors of the award.
