NEW HAVEN, Conn. --
The city of New Haven decided to promote 10 more firefighters who took the 2003 promotion exam, not just the 14 who won their landmark case of reverse discrimination that was taken to the Supreme Court.
After another quick vote by the Fire Commission and for the first time in many years, a second round of promotions were being celebrated at the New Haven Fire Department.
The 14 firefighters who sued the department in 2003 received their promotions earlier this week after taking the case all the way to the Supreme Court. The high court found that the city violated their rights when it tossed out promotional exam results in 2003 because black firefighters did not score high enough.
Last week, a federal court ordered the promotions. However there were still 10 other firefighters who did not get promotions either but did not join the lawsuit. Now they too will be promoted.
The official badge ceremony will take place on Dec. 10.
