Hawaii Firefighters Rescue Man in Canal

WAIPAHU, Hawaii --   Firefighters rescued a man who fell into a 15-foot drainage canal Monday in Waipahu. Emergency personnel were called at about 9:45 a.m. when a man walking by saw the victim on the bottom of the canal. It was on Lumikula Street right next to Crestview Community Park. Firefighters used an aerial apparatus to hoist the patient to safety about 30 minutes later.

Firefighters rescued a man who fell into a 15-foot drainage canal Monday in Waipahu.

Emergency personnel were called at about 9:45 a.m. when a man walking by saw the victim on the bottom of the canal. It was on Lumikula Street right next to Crestview Community Park.

Firefighters used an aerial apparatus to hoist the patient to safety about 30 minutes later.

"They did do initial vitals and stabilize the patient and put him into a backboard system to make sure we don't cause additional injuries to him," Honolulu Fire Department Battalion Chief Scott Lawton said.

Paramedics rushed the man, who is in his 30s, to a hospital in serious condition, according to the city's Emergency Medical Services.

No word yet on how he ended up in the canal.
