Cleveland Chief Faces Discipline Days Before Retirement

Sept. 16, 2015
Patrick Kelly and two others face internal charges related to firefighter training records.

Just days before is set to retire, Cleveland Fire Chief Patrick Kelly received a letter from the city Tuesday stating he was facing internal charges.

The details of the charges were not available, but a city spokesman said it had to do with the city's fire academy, cleveland.com reports. Two other firefighters are also facing charges.

"The investigation was initiated after the Integrity Control Office received a complaint from a firefighter assigned to the Fire Training Academy alleging possible falsification of official records," according to a statement from the city. "Upon completion of the investigation, the matter was reviewed by the Department of Law and no criminal conduct was identified. The Department of Public Safety forwarded the investigative findings and recommendations of administrative charges to Chief Patrick Kelly for review and recommendation."

Kelly, a 33-year department veteran was leaving on Sept. 21 to become chief in nearby Olmsted Township.

He was named interim chief after Darryl McGinnis was stripped of his duties in 2013.
