Neither a crane collapse nor a major New York City traffic jam could prevent a couple from exchanging vows Friday morning.
And, they have an FDNY chaplain to thank for stepping in to make the day even more memorable than they ever imagined.
FDNY Chaplain Rev. Ann Kansfield was headed to the crane collapse when she saw a woman emerge from a shop in a strapless wedding gown. She offered her turnout coat to shield her bare shoulders, and escorted Nesh Pillay a few blocks to the courthouse.
Catching a cab, Pillay's original plan, was out of the question with streets closed due to the crane collapse. Kansfield said the six block walk took a while because the bride was wearing high heels.
By the time they got there, the original officiate was gone. So, without hesitation, Kansfield jumped in.
Performing the ceremony as snow and sleet swirled and sirens wailed, the chaplain asked: "Witnesses, do you promise to support Nesh and Aaron in their marriage? Through crane collapses and snowstorms? Through to sandy beaches and sunny days?"
The crowd gave a resounding "Yes!"
After the couple exchanged emotional vows, Kansfield announced: "By the power vested in me, on behalf of the church and the FDNY, I very joyfully now pronounce you married!"
