Conn. Firefighter Charged with Worker's Comp Fraud

ROCKY HILL — A Coventry firefighter was charged with workers' compensation fraud Thursday after he was seen doing construction work despite an injury he claimed kept him from working, said a spokesman for the Chief State's Attorney.
Inspectors arrested Anthony P. Skut, 57, of Beebe Farms Road in Coventry and charged him with fraudulent claim or receipt of benefits and perjury, Mark A. Dupuis said. He was released on a written promise to appear in Superior Court in Norwich on April 28.
The arrest stems from an investigation of a complaint by the Connecticut Interlocal Risk Management Agency, which provides workers' compensation insurance coverage to Coventry, including its volunteer firefighters.
According to the warrant for his arrest, Skut reported that he had suffered a work-related injury in December at a fire scene. As a result of the reported injury, he received $6,126 in benefits, Dupuis said.
On different days, the warrant said, inspectors conducted surveillance and saw that Skut was doing carpentry work for his R.A.S. Home Builders contracting business, despite his claimed disability. When asked about his activities under oath, he was found to be dishonest, the warrant said.
The case will be prosecuted by the Workers' Compensation Fraud Control Unit of the Office of the Chief State's Attorney in Rocky Hill.
