An American flag now flies from one engine in Arlington Fire District following a compromise, but the flap is not over.
An order from the fire board earlier this week for crews to remove the stars and stripes ignited national criticism, The Poughkeepsie Journal reported.
Only one of three engines is graced with a smaller flag. Some residents, however, want the stars and stripes back on all rigs.
Arlington district officials reached an agreement Thursday "to install a flag on an engine and continue to work together to develop a standard and protocol. The Arlington Fire District recognizes and values the importance and symbolism of the American flag," officials said in a written statement.
It's evident that the fray is far from over. About 50 people gathered outside fire headquarters Thursday night, and chanted "all the flags, not one," the paper reported.
A rally for the flag is set for Saturday at noon at the Croft Corners station in Poughkeepsie.
