IN Firefighter Terminated Over Facebook Post

Nov. 7, 2016
The South Haven firefighter was initially suspended in July after making a racist post on Facebook.

A South Haven firefighter was terminated after a months long investigation into a Facebook post over the summer.

Officials did not identify the longtime volunteer firefighter/EMT, but said the actions were prohibited by fire department policy.

The firefighter told fire department and Portage Township officials that he did not make the post, according to NWITimes.com.

He was unable to provide evidence that he did not make the post, Portage Township Trustee Brendan Clancy told the newspaper.

The Facebook post in question included a photo of a moving van and a derogatory reference.

Clancy said South Haven firefighters discussed what happened to the former firefighter.

The post was seen by a man in Georgia who took a screenshot and, after sending a Facebook message to the firefighter, called the fire department to share what he saw.

“The timing is horrible,” the man told the newspaper. "It shouldn’t be on there period. Everyone should be trying to unite.”
