Ex-Firefighter Mails Flier About Former MI Fire Union President

Jan. 10, 2017
A former Birmingham firefighter mailed 1,000 fliers to call out the department's former union president.

A former Birmingham firefighter said he sent fliers to residents to inform them about the people who work for the city, but city officials said his actions are simply that of a disgruntled former employee.

Mike McIntyre, who was a firefighter for about a year, mailed 1,000 fliers out about former Local 911 president Paul Wells.

The flier say that Wells lied to supervisors and ran a business while he was at work, according to the Detroit Free Press.

“I sent it to inform the citizens of the type of people who work within their city,” McIntyre told the newspaper.

McIntrye wrote that wells was forced to resign from the union, did not have a degree despite getting promoted, and concocted a police investigation.

“As far as what was posted, it’s absolutely untrue,” Wells told the newspaper. “I have been with the department for over 18 years. I am always working on my education...In all my years of service I’ve never been disciplined. I have a sterling record.”

"The allegations contained in the mailer will be investigated accordingly, but I want to assure all residents that their safety and interactions with Birmingham fire personnel is, and continues to be, with the highest level of professionalism and care," City Manager Joe Valentine said Friday. "The Birmingham Fire Department maintains high standards for its employees and has no current reason to believe Captain Wells or any other employee has acted inappropriately in service to the city."

McIntyre joined the department in June 2015 and resigned in the fall of 2016.
