Police: NY Firefighter Who Shot Himself Won't be Charged

Feb. 21, 2017
Police won't charge the Albany firefighter, but he may face disciplinary actions from the fire department.

No charges will be filed against an Albany firefighter who shot himself in the hand while on-duty earlier this month.

Police were called to the Arbor Hill fire station around 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 10 for a shots fired call.

The unidentified firefighter found a loaded semi-automatic Glock handgun in his personal bag, according to the Times-Union. While attempting to unload the gun and move it to his car, he accidentally fired the gun and the bullet entered the left palm and exited his wrist.

"Our investigation determined that it was an accidental discharge and no crime had been committed," Albany police spokesman Officer Steve Smith said.

Police said the firefighter owned the gun and had a permit for it.

Fire Chief Warren Abriel told the newspaper that the fire department's investigation may still result in disciplinary actions since city employees are not allowed to carry guns while on-duty.
