MA Firefighter Ties as Top US Open Amateur

Brockton firefighter Matt Parziale finished the weekend at the US Open in Shinnecock Hills in New York tied as the top amateur at 16 over.

A Massachusetts firefighter and amateur golfer had a better week at the US Open than some of the more famous players in the world.

Brockton firefighter Matt Parziale, who qualified for the US Open by winning the Mid-Amateur championship, finished the weekend at 16 over par, which put him in a tie for the best score in the tournament by an amateur player. Brooks Koepka won the title at 1 over.

Parziale also played in the Masters earlier this year, but he failed to make the cut at Augusta National before becoming the first Mid-Amateur champion to make it to the weekend at the US Open in 15 years.

Those who didn't make the cut at Shinnecock Hills in New York included top players such as Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia.

Even sweeter for Parziale was that his father Vic served as his caddie during the tournament's final round on Father's Day when he shot 5-over par.
