A firefighter from southern South Carolina has spent the last four years making a difference for starving children in Africa.
WTOC has put together a touching report on Burton Fire District Capt. Bobby Davidson, who operates a mission with his wife, Kelly, called The Asaph Project. The mission is dedicated to changing the lives of impoverished children in an area called Kibera just outside the Kenyan city of Nairobi.
"They have nothing," Bobby Davidson told WTOC. "They own nothing except the clothes that they wear."
It was around four years ago when the Davidsons took some money they had saved for home renovations and instead made the first of what has become a dozen trips to Kibera. In the first year they were there, they witnessed six children they were trying to help die from curable diseases or starvation.
"Now, it's been four years and we haven't lost a child in two-and-a-half years," Kelly Davidson said.
The Davidsons accept donations and deliver food, clothing, and diapers to a pastor who cares for the children while their parents work. The couple also helped install a system to provide fresh water.
"To see them be able to take baths and play and be children for the first time was amazing," Kelly Davidson said.
