MI Firefighter Swiped Pills at Fatal Scene
Sept. 24 -- A firefighter is accused of swiping a prescription bottle of pills from the scene of a fatal motorcycle crash in Macomb County's Harrison Township on Aug. 21.
A Macomb County sheriff's deputy body camera recorded the incident and the firefighter, Steve Hart, 45, is now charged with tampering with evidence, a felony punishable by up to four years in prison.
Video shows the firefighter pick up a small object, which he observes for a few seconds before walking around the damaged motorcycle and apparently putting the object into the breast pocket of his jacket.
The first deputies to the crash scene reported seeing an orange pill bottle on the ground, but by the time members of the Crash Investigation Unit arrived it had vanished, the Macomb County Sheriff's Office said.
This led to a review of video footage from the scene. Hart has since been placed on paid leave while an internal investigation is conducted and the criminal matter is pending, the sheriff's office said.
