Resignations Continue at IA Fire Department

Feb. 24, 2019
The resignation of a Cedar Falls fire captain marks the ninth firefighter to leave since last fall over a new public safety officer program.

CEDAR FALLS -- A third Cedar Falls firefighter has resigned in 2019, the ninth since September.

Cedar Falls Fire Capt. Robert Inouye, 50, has resigned effective March 21. He sent his resignation letter to the city Thursday. He was hired in July 1994.

The resignation comes a week after former senator and Cedar Falls firefighter Jeff Danielson resigned for a new job as the American Wind Energy Association's central region director.

In interviews after Danielson's resignation, he cited Cedar Falls' Public Safety officer program as one reason he is leaving.

Inouye has not released a reason for his resignation.

In his resignation letter, Inouye said, "It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the citizens of Cedar Falls for 24 1/2 years."

Inouye is taking a job out of town in a field outside of public safety, said Jeff Olson, director of public safety.

"He's a great asset and we wish him the best," Olson said.

There are now 16 full-time firefighters on the Cedar Falls Fire Rescue force. There are also more than 30 public safety officers now hired and more being transferred to the fire department.
