Hiring Vote Follows OH Firefighter Walkouts

Mad River Township officials called a special meeting Friday to discuss hiring after a dozen Fire and EMS employees resigned this week.

A special meeting has been called by the Mad River Twp. trustees to discuss hiring new fire personnel.

Mad River Twp. trustee Bob McClure said the department has applications and candidates to fill some of the open positions. Mad River Twp. Fire and EMS lost 12 experienced employees Monday and Tuesday this week to a mass exodus following the announcement that no changes in leadership was going to take place.

“We got quite a few wanting to be hired and more than four will be discussed,” McClure said. “We will be looking at the possibility of hiring them on probationary period pending background and reference checks.”

The special meeting will take place Friday at 7:30 a.m. at the Mad River Twp. firehouse at 260 E. Main Street, the notice says.

Ten employees including captains, lieutenants, crew leaders, paramedics and fire inspectors resigned from the staff Monday night at a regular board meeting. Two more resigned the next day.

McClure said so far, the department has been able to fill its crews each day. On Tuesday, the firehouse was fully staffed and went on 10 runs. The firehouse was also fully staffed on Wednesday and went on 10 more runs, McClure said, and the department provided mutual aid to another department.

“People are stepping up and we got people who care about the community stepping up,” McClure said.

A phone message for Mike Gardone, one of the firefighters who resigned Monday night and has been the spokesman for the group, was not immediately returned Thursday morning.
