OH Fire Chief Calls Lawmaker's Criticism 'Grossly Inaccurate'

In a social media post, a Toledo City Council member was upset by the response of Toledo firefighters to a woman who fell from her wheelchair. But the fire chief says the comments are "unfair."

A social media post by an Ohio city lawmaker criticizing firefighters response has upset department officials, who call the post "a gross misrepsentation of what occurred at the incident."

On Saturday, Toledo City Council member Larry Sykes posted photos and video of a woman who was injured after falling from her wheelchair onto a sidewalk earlier in the week. In the post, Sykes was upset that Toledo firefighters didn't respond faster and that they didn't come from Station 1, which was near the incident.

"Would you believe the assistant came from almost a mile away … !" Sykes wrote. "The lady was crying and screaming I believe she broke her arm and I had to yell to them to cover her with a d.. blanket. Unbelievable … ."

The woman was taken to the hospital, and her injuries were not life-threatening, WNWO-TV reports. An EMS captain who responded drove the woman's wheelchair and her boyfriend to the hospital.

Fire Chief Brian Byrd was upset with Sykes' post, saying it was "grossly inaccurate and unfair."

"I'm going to be honest, I did not like it," he told WNWO. "I was not happy about it because it was a gross misrepresentation of what occurred at the incident."

According to the department, Station 1 only houses administrative offices now. The firehouse hasn't been used to respond to calls since the late 1980s, and no equipment or emergency personnel are stationed there.

Byrd told WNWO that firefighters had responded within three minutes, and the department said an EMS captain who was leaving his shift reached the scene in 30 seconds.

"Well, often times, some of the complaints we get from anyone, they really don't know what we do, how we do it, logistics of what we do and timeframes involved," Byrd said. "I'm sure that had something to do with it, but there should be some folks that have a little bit more of an understanding of what we do, though."

In his post, Sykes said he would address his complaints at Tuesday's council meeting. Byrd said he hasn't spoken with the council member since the post and will hear what he has to say at the meeting.

"Well, according to him, he's looking forward to handling it on Tuesday, so we'll see what happens," Byrd told WNWO.
