A former member of the Hoboken Fire Fighters Local 1078 executive board has been charged with forging checks.
Hoboken police began investing Thomas Aligo, 54, a former vice president of the city's local in October.
Police say Aligo forged 61 checks worth a total of $28,390.02 over the course of two years starting in July 2018, according to NJ.com.
Fire Chief Brian Crimmins said Aligo, a Waldwick resident, was suspended without pay from the department where he has been a firefighters for 22 years.
“The fact is that my client has served the city of Hoboken dutifully and impressively for more than 20 years,” said James Lisa, Aigo's attoney said. “He’s been a great fireman and a great union leader so I suspect at the end of the day my client will be fully vindicated.”
“The allegations in the complaint, if true, are unfortunate,” Mayor Ravi Bhalla told NJ.com.
Aligo was released on a court summons.
