CA Fire District to Lay Off Firefighters, Shut Down on Christmas

Dec. 6, 2020
The El Medio Fire Protection District will close permanently Dec. 25 after a tax measure to help fund the department was defeated in the November election.

Firefighters from a California fire district will be laid off on Christmas as the department permanently shuts down.

A terse message on El Medio Fire Protection District's Facebook page announced the decision Friday. The fire district covers an area just south of the Oroville city limits.

"ALL EL Medio Firefighters will be laid off permanently, on Christmas! Yes... Christmas.," the online update stated.

The layoffs and closing were prompted by the failure to pass Measure D, a parcel tax that would have raised money for the fire district, the Oroville Mercury-Register reports. A district board meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
