FEMA's AFG Program Application Period Open

The application period began Jan. 4, and FEMA will be hosting live webinars and offering other assistance to fire departments applying for a grant.

The application period for FEMA's Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program for fiscal year 2020 is open.

Fire departments interested in applying for grants has until 5 p.m. ET on Feb. 21 to submit applications.

The purpose of the AFG program is "to provide critically needed resources that equip and train emergency personnel to recognized standards, enhance operational efficiencies, foster interoperability, and support community resilience," according to FEMA. Since 2001, the program has helped firefighters and other first responders obtain critically needed resources necessary for protecting the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.

FEMA offers help on how to apply for the grants at its website. The agency also will be hosting a series of live webinars to outline important information about the application process beginning Jan. 12.
