On August 19 and 20, active and retired firefighters from the Milwaukee and Racine fire departments took to the streets in the 4th annual Ignite the Spirit Milwaukee Pedal for the Brave cross country bicycle ride.
The event was organized by several Milwaukee firefighters in 2018 following the death of Milwaukee Fire Lieutenant Kristin Ciganek-Schroeder in 2017 from duty-related cancer. The goal of Ignite the Spirit Milwaukee is to provide physical, emotional and financial support to area firefighters and their families during times of need.
Twenty-six riders participated in this year's ride.
An engine company from the City of Wisconsin Rapids Fire Department escorted riders for the first several miles of the route.
In addition to donations from members of the public and financial support from the local business community, Ignite the Spirit conducts several annual fundraising events including the Pedal for the Brave bike ride, Pulling Together fire truck pull competition, and the Milwaukee Firefighter Calendar.Proceeds from the bike ride are used to support the Kristin Ciganek Schroeder Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded annually to support women pursuing a career in the fire service.
