Off-duty Probationary D.C. Firefighter Dies Day After Fire Academy Graduation
An off-duty probationary firefighter died early Sunday of injuries sustained in a fall that reportedly happened while she was reportedly celebrating her fire academy graduation less than 36 hours earlier.
Sadia D. Williams, 21, graduated from the fire academy on Friday and was assigned to Engine Co. 13. But she died before her first shift, D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Vito Maggiolo.
"Probationary Firefighter Williams was a dedicated employee, a rising professional, and a bright presence within our organization. Throughout her training at the DC Fire and EMS Training Academy, she displayed strength, commitment, and the promise of a meaningful career in public service," according to a department statement.
Early reports indicated she was celebrating graduation with fellow rookie firefighters when she fell from a balcony.
