Sperry, OK, Fire Chief Faces Assault Charge After Altercation with Firefighter
After an argument during a department meeting escalated to a physical confrontation with another firefighter, Sperry Fire Chief Mitchell Williamson is facing a misdemeanor assault and battery charge.
The Sperry Fire Department called a meeting to discuss internal affairs, including a screenshot of the group text that sparked the altercation. The screenshot was sent to the person referenced in the message, who later filed a formal complaint with the town of Sperry and its mayor, according to newson6.
During the meeting, Williamson asked a firefighter to discuss his concerns. The screenshot was brought up, and another firefighter admitted sending it. Williamson then tried to terminate the firefighter, which led to a heated argument.
According to court documents, the confrontation continued outside the fire station, where Williamson demanded the firefighter turn over his department radio.
Investigators reviewed security video showing the fight escalating. The video showed another firefighter putting his arm on Williamson’s chest, trying to break up the fight. Williamson is accused of pushing the firefighter with his left arm, making him step back.
After being shown the video, Williamson acknowledged making physical contact, telling investigators, “I guess I pushed him because he put his arm on my chest.”
